Horse leasing at Cessna Stables
It is an inconvenient truth that unless you practice your riding skills often (ie several times/week), progress will be very slow or nonexistent. This is a challenge for most riders since they generally do not own a horse and are likely not ready or able to jump into that level of commitment. Alternatively there are many seasoned rider's who are between horses or who are simply not able to own due to life circumstances. Leasing can be a beneficial option to all parties - both the lessor and lessee. Best case scenario, the lessee gets riding time without the commitment and long term cost of purchasing, the lessor gets some income to offset the horse's expenses, and the horse gets exercise. Some leases are "full" - the lessee pays all of the costs associated with caring for the horse - board, vet, farrier. If the horse is particularly valuable in terms of training or ability, the lessee will likely pay a percentage of the horse's depreciation for the time he is being leased. Many leases are partial - the lessee pays a partial amount of the horse's expenses each month. Generally the lessee is sharing the horse's time with the owner or other lessee's. There are as many different leases as there are people willing to lease, it is up to the parties involved to set the particulars. I will outline the details of what I offer to my students below:
Half Lease (2 rides per week outside of weekly lesson) = $350/month
It is required that the lessee continue in once weekly lessons to be eligible to lease a Cessna Stables horse. This is so that the leasing experience is a positive one for both the horse and the rider. The cost of lessons is not included in the lease price. However, if the student is leasing their lesson horse, they would be eligible to pay the "owned" horse lesson price. For instance, a person participating in a half lease would pay $350 for the lease + $45 for 4 semi-private lessons = $530/month. Considering that board alone for an owned horse costs $600 and you do not have to pay for vet, farrier, equipment, etc - a lease is a significant value! It is required that lessee's have reached the "advanced beginner" level for their safety and that of their lease horse's. If you are interested in leasing, please let your instructor know so that we can work together towards that goal!
Leasing is an excellent 1st step into the world of horse ownership. The lessee will have the opportunity to see if they have the time available to commit to a horse before purchasing and being locked into that commitment. More so, it is a great way to exponentially increase skills on a horse that the student already knows they will be a good match with. After several months, often the student will be ready to move on to a bigger challenge or may find they are ready to purchase their own horse. With the additional experience acquired, they will be much better prepared to make a wise choice and find a partner that will be suitable for them for many years. In the best of circumstances, purchasing a horse is the beginning of a relationship that will last several decades. Like marriage, with the right partner, it can be an awesome experience where both of you can grow and enjoy each other. However, without the right preparation or if the partners are unsuitable to each other - the honeymoon quickly turns into a lot of frustration and disappointment. Leasing is a great way to grow as a rider and acquire the skills need to be successful with your own horse when that day comes.
